Family, Eye Candy, and the City of Temples: My Kathmandu Catastrophe

TL;DR: I went to Kathmandu, Nepal with my family and while the city was beautiful, my family was, well, family. I saw some amazing sights, ate some tasty food, and learned that my siblings are more annoying than ever. But hey, at least the mountains looked pretty.

Family Vacation, Family Drama

You know how it is. You’re an author, you’ve traveled the world, you’ve seen things, you’ve done things… So naturally, what do you do for vacation? You take your family to Nepal.

I knew this was a bad idea from the moment we landed. My sister, Sarah, started complaining about the lack of Wi-Fi. My brother, Tom, insisted on wearing a ridiculous “Namaste” shirt with a picture of a cartoon elephant. And my parents? Well, they were just happy to be out of the house, which was a relief, but also meant I couldn’t escape them.

Kathmandu: Eye Candy for the Senses

Kathmandu itself was a fascinating city. The old city is a maze of temples, shrines, and bustling markets. The air was thick with the smell of spices and incense. The people were friendly and welcoming, always smiling and greeting you with “Namaste”. It was a visual feast, a sensory overload in the best way possible.

Durbar Square: History and Beauty

The highlight of the trip was definitely Durbar Square. This ancient square is home to several historic temples, including the famous Taleju Temple. The architecture was incredible – intricate carvings, towering spires, and colorful decorations. It was like stepping back in time. Even my siblings, who were usually glued to their phones, seemed to be captivated by the beauty of the place.

The Boudhanath Stupa: A Spiritual Experience

The Boudhanath Stupa is a massive Buddhist stupa, one of the largest in the world. The structure is stunning, covered in intricate paintings and prayer flags. There’s a sense of peace and tranquility that fills the air, and you can’t help but feel a little bit of awe.

Food, Glorious Food

Of course, no trip to Nepal is complete without a taste of the local cuisine. We sampled all sorts of delicious dishes, from the spicy momos (dumplings) to the flavorful dal baht (rice and lentils). My personal favorite was the thukpa (noodle soup). It was warm, comforting, and perfect for the chilly mountain air.

The Mountains and the Memories

The real reason I went to Nepal was to see the Himalayas. The view from the Kathmandu Valley was breathtaking. The snow-capped peaks soared into the sky, majestic and awe-inspiring. It was a reminder that even the most mundane things can be made extraordinary by the right perspective.

Looking back, this trip to Nepal was an adventure for sure. I saw incredible sights, ate delicious food, and learned a lot about myself and my family. Oh, and my siblings might be slightly less annoying now that they’ve been exposed to the wonders of the world. Maybe. But the mountains? They were definitely the highlight.
